TRIBUTES
Andrew de Lory
In the spring of 1963, Senator Kennedy addressed an assembly at my High School in Orleans on Cape Cod. It was a powerful and inspiring speech, sprinkled with stories of childhood adventures with Brother Jack.
Having broken some rule, the much-feared Principal had ordered me to report to his office immediately after the assembly which I did. Much to my surprise and delight Teddy appeared and asked me why I was in the Principal's office. I said that I was in trouble and gave him some details.
He replied "Oh, I know the feeling! Let me put a good word in for you when he gets here."
While waiting several minutes he signed an autograph and we talked about our common pleasure of sailing. I mention that Frank Roosevelt III had taught me some advanced techniques at a local Summer camp and he agreed that he must have been very skilled having learned to sail from his Father who was taught by FDR.
The delayed Principal finally appeared and was at first speechless then, very cordial to the Senator before dismissing me.
What a precious memory of a brief encounter with one of America's greatest patriots!
