Women have lost a great champion and a dear friend in the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy. We send our deep condolences to his family, his extraordinary staff and colleagues, and to the many people whom he has befriended throughout the world.

We are grateful to Senator Kennedy for his extraordinary leadership and accomplishments in improving the lives of virtually every woman in this country. He led the efforts to restore Title IX, prohibit sexual harassment in the workplace, raise the minimum wage, and enact the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. He launched a series of women's health initiatives, including protections against forced sterilizations of low-income women.

The Senator stood for strong constitutional protections - including equal protection and the right to privacy - and worked to ensure that the federal judiciary would respect those protections.

Senator Kennedy also made possible many of the investments and programs we now have for low-income children and families - in child care, early education, and child health.

Senator Kennedy's tireless leadership on health care reform reflects his lifetime of dedication to health care issues, and we will continue our work to ensure that its successful passage becomes part of his monumental legacy.

We hold him close to our hearts and take solace in the knowledge that our daughters and our granddaughters - and indeed so many others - will continue to benefit immeasurably from living in a country that bears his lasting imprint.
