TRIBUTES
Marianne Boula
It was the summer of 1985. I worked at a residential treatment program in Western Mass for emotionally disturbed adolescents. As part of our summer educational program some of the kids asked to go to Washington, D.C. Since our budget was limited we asked Senator Kennedy's Boston office if they could assist us in perhaps getting discounted admissions to some of the sites in the Capitol. Done. Both the kids and the staff were very excited as they set off to Washington.
Two days into the trip I received a frantic call from the group leader informing me that they were being "detained" at Andrews Air Force Base after one of the kids had run onto the runway just as Air Force One was landing with the President on board. I made my own frantic call to our executive director - interceding with the FBI was definitely above my job description. His response was two words: "Call Teddy." I did, and in less than two hours our group leader called to tell me that they were on their way back to the camp site. Just one small episode which was significant only to those of us involved but which has never been forgotten.
